Ford Recalls Over 410,000 Explorers Due to Potential Steering Loss

Ford announced a recall of 412,774 Ford Explorers due to problem with suspension components that could result in a loss of steering control.

According to NHTSA,  certain 2017 to 2019 Ford Explorers have rear suspension toe links that may fracture. If that occurs, the driver can lose the ability to steer, potentially causing an accident. The vehicles weren’t produced in “VIN order,” which means consecutively, which is why it’s important for all owners to check to see if their particular vehicle is part of the recall.

“Information as to the applicability of this action to specific vehicles can best be obtained by either calling Ford’s toll-free line (1-866-436-7332) or by contacting a local Ford or Lincoln dealer who can obtain specific information regarding the vehicles from the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) database,” NHTSA reports.

The cause of the defect hasn’t been determined, but owners will be notified by mail — or can check using the information above — when to bring their vehicles in for service. The repair is free of charge.

There have been 26 reports received by Ford about the problem as of late January. The company is aware of two accidents “potentially” related to the issue when each vehicle hit a guardrail or barrier. No injuries or deaths have been reported.
