The next generation of the Buick Envision will be built in the United States, not China.

General Motors builds the current Envision in China, but the company says it will build the next-generation Envision at a plant near Kansas City.

Production will begin in 2028.

“This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs,” GM said in a statement that it provided to Reuters.

The Envision has been shipped to the U.S. from China since 2017, and it was subject to a 25 percent tariff since 2018. It was not exempted from tariffs during the first administration of U.S. president Donald Trump.

Tariffs on Chinese-made goods have increased as China and the U.S. duke it out in a trade war. Former president Joe Biden, who was in office between the two Trump administrations, also tariffed vehicles made in China.

According to Reuters, the Envision’s Chinese roots meant it was sometimes criticized by the UAW’s leadership, as well as by UAW members in swing states like Ohio and Michigan.

GM has already moved production of the Chevrolet Equinox to the same Kansas City-area plant from Mexico, and the Chevrolet Bolt EV is being produced there in a limited run.

After the Bolt’s run ends, the plant will be building only internal-combustion vehicles, with Equinox production beginning in 2027.

Meanwhile, the General also plans to move production of the Chevrolet Blazer from Mexico to Spring Hill, Tennessee.
