How Ford Stole The 2026 Detroit Auto Show

how ford stole the 2026 detroit auto show

Ford made big news at January’s 2026 Detroit Auto Show. The Dearborn-based manufacturer debuted a pair of new high-performance models that appeal to enthusiasts at both extremes of the automotive spectrum. A hot new Mustang is slated to arrive later this year, while a souped-up Bronco SUV is also in the works.

As its name suggests, the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC features a – you guessed it – supercharged engine, specifically a 5.2-liter V8 that will deliver, well, a lot of power and torque. Ford hasn’t shared any specifics just yet, but just know that this engine will be as spicy as a Carolina Reaper hot pepper.

Aside from that engine, the Dark Horse SC also gains a host of visual changes, many of which are highly functional, improving the cooling and providing much more downforce at speed. These upgrades should make the car a joy to drive on the track, though this Mustang is also very much built for the street, the best of both worlds.

For drivers that want to get away – away from the pavement, that is – the upcoming 2027 Bronco RTR is just the ticket. Developed in conjunction with Vaughn Gittin, Jr., this horse-themed desert runner gains a few suspension and powertrain enhancements to further improve its off-road performance without pushing the price tag into the stratosphere.

Ford at the Detroit Auto Show: The 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC and 2027 Bronco RTR

The Return of Performance in Detroit

The Detroit Auto Show may be quieter than in years past, but Ford hasn’t forgotten the enthusiasts. The Dearborn-based automaker recently unveiled two exciting high-performance vehicles: a fresh Bronco trim and a mega-powerful Mustang coupe.

Meet the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC

The new 2026 Dark Horse SC is designed to slot perfectly between the standard Dark Horse and the “bonkers” GTD version of the Mustang. As the name suggests, this model is supercharged.

Powertrain and Performance Under the hood sits a supercharged 5.2-liter quad-cam modular V8 engine. While Ford hasn’t released official output figures for the SC, the same engine in the GTD produces approximately 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque.

  • Transmission: A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) comes standard for rapid gear shifts.
  • Note: A manual transmission is not offered, as Ford prioritized lap times and technical performance over traditional driver engagement.

The “Strong Man” Aesthetic The Dark Horse SC features a unique exterior anchored by the “Strong Man” graphic. This frontal applique unifies the body lines and highlights an enlarged grille that flows 60% more air for improved cooling.

Track-Ready Upgrades

  • Aero: A new aluminum hood vent improves cooling and provides 2.5x more downforce than the standard Dark Horse.
  • Track Pack: Includes a unique spoiler generating 620 lbs of downforce at 180 mph.
  • Hardware: Features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, and gorgeous carbon fiber wheels.
  • Weight Savings: These lightweight components remove 120 lbs of unsprung rotational mass (30 lbs per corner), significantly sharpening steering precision.

Chassis and Availability The SC utilizes the latest MagneRide adjustable dampers, which react to the road 1,000 times per second. It also features revised springs, sway bars, knuckles, and control arms.

  • Ordering: Opens this Spring.
  • Deliveries: Expected Summer 2026.
  • Pricing: While not official, it will start well above the standard Dark Horse’s $71,000 MSRP.

The 2027 Ford Bronco RTR

Developed in conjunction with RTR Vehicles and off-road racer Vaughn Gittin Jr., the 2027 Bronco RTR (Ready to Rock) is essentially a full-size UTV for the street.

Bridging the Gap The RTR sits just below the Bronco Raptor in the lineup. It offers enhanced capability for those who prefer the standard Bronco’s narrower “single-track” width, allowing it to fit into tighter trails where a Raptor might be too wide.

Mechanical Specifications

  • Engine: 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder.
  • Output: 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque.
  • Anti-Lag Technology: A standout feature that keeps the throttle plate open and the turbo spinning when you lift off the gas. This provides immediate weight transfer to the rear when you get back on the power, helping the front end clear obstacles (“whoops”) more effectively.
  • Suspension: Standard models get 33-inch tires; the Sasquatch package upgrades this to a HOSS 3.0 suspension with 35-inch Goodyear tires, providing an extra inch of ground clearance.

Visual Packages Ford offers four appearance levels for the RTR:

  1. Base: No graphics with grayscale accents.
  2. Graphics Pack: Side and hood graphics in grayscale.
  3. Hyperlime Package: Vibrant “Hyperlime” accents on the trail sights and beadlocks.
  4. Hyperlime Graphics Delete: For owners who want the bright accents but plan to wrap the vehicle.

Availability

  • Public Debut: February 2027 at King of the Hammers.
  • Ordering: Opens October 2027.
  • Dealership Arrival: January 2028.
